1

brown sugar, packed
1
third cup
pure maple syrup
1
teaspoon
vanilla extract
2
cups
all-purpose flour
1
teaspoon
baking soda
1

1

quarter teaspoon
ground cardamom
1
quarter teaspoon
ground cloves
1
quarter teaspoon
black pepper
1
half cup
chopped walnuts (optional)
1
half cup
dark chocolate chips (optional)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
Add the maple syrup and vanilla extract to the butter mixture, mixing until well combined.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, cloves, and black pepper.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Don’t overmix.
If using, fold in the chopped walnuts and dark chocolate chips.
Using a tablespoon, scoop out portions of dough and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden and the centers are slightly soft.
Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
Sprinkle a light dusting of powdered sugar over the cooled cookies for a touch of elegance.
